THE SEMESTER IS almost over, so I all have to do is give final exams between now and next Wednesday; that'll be almost easy. I half-way screwed up one of my third Biology II exams last week, but I skittered on the edge of collapse and most of them are happy. That was the one that I produced in about 40 minutes. Sometimes that works, other times it doesn't.

Ruth has been sad for the last 24 hours since a young rabbit with a huge abcess is being euthanized. He was going to go into the foster rabbit system after being abandoned. His previous superstupid owners left him at the vets when they realized that their poor care resulted in this rabbit having an abcess the size of a golfball on his lower jaw. The infection started to spread quickly, and the rabbit's condition was deteriorating. So Ruth agreed to Dr. Alvin's suggestion of euthanasia rather than surgery that would probably just make him uncomfortable. Ruth is wrestling with doubts about their decision, since arguably the rabbit might have recovered after intense care. It's a tough business, since you know rabbits coming in to you are often mistreated and suffer from a range of problems. The knowledge doesn't erase the sadness though.
